Softball Keeps Rolling at Desert Stinger Tournament

LAS VEGAS – Groundhog Day has past, but it was déjà vu all over again for the Humboldt State softball team. The Lumberjack offense crushed and pitching mystified opposing batters as they picked up two more wins at the Desert Stinger Tournament.

"I love how these ladies are just coming and playing the game of softball," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We are being aggressive at the plate, getting defensive stops on the field, doing the job in the circle and, most importantly, having fun. On the day, we were able to get everybody in the game in some aspect or another, and when we faced adversity, the girls never panicked and kept their heads up."

HSU defeated New Mexico Highlands 17-5 in six innings and rolled past Augustana 10-1 in five innings in game two.

GAME ONE
(Humboldt State 17, New Mexico Highlands 5)
The Green and Gold plated 10 runs before they faced adversity in game one. Illa Haley smacked a three-run homer to left in the first inning to give HSU a 5-0 lead. The Jacks added four more runs in the second frame, and Winona Vigil drove in their 10th run in the fourth. Vigil went 4-for-4 and drove in a pair against the Cowgirls.

New Mexico Highlands responded with four runs off HSU relievers in the fourth inning, and the Cowgirls scored another run in the fifth.

Tiffany Hollingsworth drilled a ball over the right centerfield wall to plate two Jacks in the seven-run sixth inning. The senior recorded three hits and had two RBI.

In her second appearance of the season, Kalyn Paque blanked the Cowgirls in 4.1 innings. She fanned five and walked a pair without surrendering a hit.

GAME TWO
(Humboldt State 10, Augustana 1)
HSU got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap. Vigil slapped a single down the left field line to put the Jacks ahead 1-0 in the second inning.

After grounding out in her first at-bat, Haley made the Vikings pitcher pay her second time at the dish. The sophomore from Sacramento belted her second three-run roundtripper of the afternoon to increase the Green and Gold advantage to 6-0 through three.

A single through the right side scored Augustana's lone run in the third.

The Jacks plated four more runs in the fourth. Hanna Holland opened the frame with an RBI double, and Breonna Bejaran capped the effort with a run-scoring single to right. Bejaran was the only HSU player with a multi-hit performance against the Vikings, she went 2-for-2 and drew a walk.

Madison Williams tossed a complete game and recorded her second win.  She pitched 5.0 innings of one-run ball and yielded five hits.
