LAS VEGAS – The Humboldt State softball team closed out the Desert Stinger Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Minot State en route to a Tournament title.
After scoring a combined 49 runs in the first four games of the season, the Lumberjack offense took a breather on Sunday, and ace
Madison Williams rose to the occasion. The senior from Brentwood, Calif., pitched a complete game, allowed just one run and fanned nine.
HSU manufactured a run in the first, and it all started at the top of the lineup.
Hanna Holland drew a leadoff walk, stole second, swiped third and came home on a Minot State miscue.
The Beavers limited the Jacks to one hit over the next two innings, but the Green and Gold offense was far from finished.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth,
Illa Haley reached on an error and came home when
Winona Vigil cleared the bases with a two-run homer to left field.
Breonna Bejaran belted a two-run shot in the fifth and Haley had a solo bomb to lead off the bottom of the sixth frame. Haley has a home run in three straight games, and she finished with her second multi-hit game of the season.
Williams and Haley were both named to the All-Tournament Team, and
Tiffany Hollingsworth was tabbed the Desert Stinger Tournament MVP.
HSU returns to the North Coast and is scheduled to host Chico State in a four-game series beginning Friday. The first pitch for the home opener is scheduled for noon.
