Hot Bats Lead Jacks to Series Sweep

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. – Humboldt State softball completed the four-game sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday. HSU took game one 7-2, and finished off the Toros in five innings in game two with a final score of 11-1.

The Lumberjacks, who rank as the nation's No. 1 team, improved to 18-1 overall and 13-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

"Even though we are never satisfied, we were much more pleased with our performances today," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett.

Senior Madison Williams paced the Jacks striking out six, in her 4.0 scoreless innings. With the win, she improved to 9-1 on the season with a 1.15 ERA.

HSU wasted no time getting on the board as a Tiffany Hollingsworth swatted a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning.

A pair of sacrifice flies by Kelly Sonnemann and Sydney Roberts in the bottom of the second put HSU up comfortably 5-0. Sonnemann struck again in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to left field scoring Lauren Lipe. Later in the inning, Sonnemann scored on an errant throw to third attempting to catch her stealing which opened HSU's largest lead at 7-0.

Dominguez Hills put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning, scoring twice, but the damage was already done, and the Jacks took game one with a final score of 7-2.

Game two saw Dominguez Hills strike first on a RBI double to centerfield in the top of the second. A well-executed relay from HSU caught a second Toros baserunner trying to score limiting them to one run in the inning.

The Jacks didn't trail for long as a two-run homer by Winona Vigil put HSU back on top in the bottom of the second. The Green and Gold were just getting started with the long ball as they exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The big inning began with a solo home run by Kalyn Paque and was finished off with a two-run bomb off the bat of Illa Haley putting the Jacks up 11-1.

"Our bats came alive today and really took the pressure off our pitching and defense," said Sarchett.

Paque also went the distance for the Jacks on the mound surrendering just four hits in 5.0 innings, on her way to her ninth victory on the season.

The Jacks are back in action Sunday when they host Dominican University in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at McKinleyville High School.
