No.1 HSU Softball Drops Doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.- Humboldt State dropped both games in Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State Bernardino. The Coyotes took game one 9-1 and game two 8-5. This is the first time the Lumberjacks have dropped both games in a doubleheader since 2015.

With the losses No.1 HSU falls to 20-3 overall and 13-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

A defensive miscue in game one put the Lumberjacks in tough spot on Saturday allowing San Bernardino to have big inning and put the game away. The Coyotes took advantage of a two out error and went on to put up 5 unearned runs giving them a 6-0 lead. HSU put up its only run in game one in the top of the 6th inning on an RBI single off the bat of Sydney Roberts scoring Kelly Sonnemann.

"I have to give San Bernardino credit, they came out swinging the bats and put pressure on us from the start," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We didn't help our cause at all with a lot of mental mistakes and missed opportunities."

With the loss Madison Williams dropped to 10-2 on the season.

Game two saw the Green and Gold Strike first as a first inning Solo Home Run to centerfield by Tiffany Hollingsworth put the Jacks up 1-0. They struck again in the top of the second on a solo home run by Kalyn Paque. Later in the same inning Sydney Roberts singled to centerfield scoring Lona Dengler and giving HSU a 3-0 lead.

The Coyotes answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning making the score 3-2 in the Lumberjacks favor. San Bernardino exploded for seven hits and six runs in the bottom of the third putting them up 8-3.

HSU added two more runs, one in the top of the fifth when Breonna Bejaran scored on a wild pitch, and another in the top of the sixth when Sydney Roberts grounded out to second scoring Winona Vigil. The loss is Kalyn Paque's first of the season and she now sits at 10-1.

"We hate to lose but today doesn't define us as a team. We need to learn from this and move onto tomorrow," said Sachett.

HSU is back in action tomorrow when they wrap up the series with Cal State San Bernardino with another doubleheader scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m.
