STOCKTON, Calif. – The Lumberjacks fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and were unable to overcome a strong pitching performance from California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year Haley Gilham as Humboldt State softball lost to Chico State 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Arnaiz Stadium.
A pair of wild pitches and a double gave the Wildcats (37-14) the first-inning advantage.
Gilham limited HSU to just one hit over the next four frames, but the Green and Gold cut the lead to one in the fourth.
Breonna Bejaran grounded out to second with runners at second and third to make the score 2-1.
The Jacks (35-13) loaded the bases in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not take advantage of their scoring opportunities.
Madison Williams made the start and took the loss. She pitched 7.0 innings, allowed seven hits and surrendered two earned runs. Williams finished with 11 strikeouts.
HSU returns to action when it faces the winner of the Cal State San Bernardino/Cal State Monterey Bay matchup in an elimination game at 5 p.m.
