Urban Knights Defeat Volleyball in Series Finale

ARCATA, Calif. – Academy of Art avenged Thursday's loss and defeated the Humboldt State volleyball team 3-2 Friday afternoon in Lumberjack Arena.

Despite leading for a majority of the first set, the Jacks allowed the visitors to pull within two points down the stretch. The Urban Knights ended the frame on an 11-5 run, which proved to be a sign of things to come for the resilient Academy of Art squad.

"Overall we were just a different team than last night," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We really weren't as consistent in serve-receive as we were last night. We are a team that really struggles when we're not in-system. Our offense struggles quite a bit when our passing isn't there."

HSU won the first set 25-21, but Academy of Art's near comeback gave them momentum in the second. The home team committed a match-high nine errors and never led en route to a 25-21 loss in set two.

"Our setting was not as consistent today, and our hitters were struggling as a result of that," said Wood. "We're not able to finish points and terminate when the sets aren't there for us to get a good, solid swing on the ball."

It looked like the Green and Gold regained their edge in the third set as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead and went on an 11-0 run midway through the action. The Jacks compiled a .296 hitting percentage, their best of the match, and captured the frame by a score of 25-18.

Academy of Art rattled off five straight points to close out a 25-21 win in the fourth and force a winner-take-all fifth set.

Errors plagued the home team in the final frame, and the Urban Knights took advantage of each Green and Gold miscue. Academy of Art trailed 3-2 in the early going before an 8-2 run put it in control. The final set went to the Urban Knights by a score of 15-10.

Senior Janelle Ayala was HSU's top performer Thursday. She led the squad with four aces, five blocks and 10 kills. Ayala finished with a team-best 16.5 points.

"We will learn a lot from last night and today," said Wood. "I am disappointed that we didn't finish out this match in the fourth set. Some girls felt we didn't play with a sense of urgency down the stretch. There is not a single team we will face this season that is incapable of coming back on us if we let up."

HSU travels to the DII West Region Volleyball Showcase next week in Lacey, Wash. The Jacks will meet the Saints of Saint Martin's University on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m.
