LACEY, Wash. – Humboldt State women's volleyball never found its offensive footing in Thursday evening's 3-0 (19-25, 14-25, 23-25) loss to Saint Martin's at the DII West Region Showcase in Marcus Pavilion.
The Green and Gold slipped to 1-2 overall after suffering their second straight loss. Saint Martin's is the tournament host and improved its record to 4-1.
"We got off to a bad start in all three sets tonight, which resulted in playing from behind all night long," said HSU Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "Our setting location was off and made it challenging for our hitters to get it done. We will learn from tonight and bounce back tomorrow."
HSU took an early lead in the first set, but saw it disappear behind a furious 13-2 run by the home team. The Jacks committed 10 errors and compiled a .000 hitting percentage in the set one loss.
The Saints dominated the second set behind an impressive .448 hitting percentage. Rachel Gondrezick was Saint Martin's offensive leader with seven of her match-high 12 kills in the frame.
Saint Martin's got out to a 5-0 advantage in the final set, but HSU battled back to make it a competitive one. The third frame featured six ties, and Nicolette Nesbitt provided match point for the Saints.
Lauren Reid was HSU's kills leader with 10, and
Taylor Yancey led the way with 19 assists.
Janelle Ayala continues to be a defensive presence in the middle as she recorded a career-high eight block assists. The Jacks finished with nine total blocks.
HSU won't have time to dwell on Thursday's setback as it tangles with Notre Dame de Namur Friday at 12:30 p.m.
