HSU Tops Holy Names, Men’s Soccer Rolls to 3-1 Start

SAN FRANCISCO – On the strength of a late goal by Max Steinmetz, Humboldt State men's soccer downed host Holy Names by a final of 2-1 on Sunday.

Isaiah Dairo assisted on the game-winning goal which put the Jacks ahead at the 78:11 mark, and Marco Silveira managed HSU's other score at 31:07. The Hawks got on the board first at 11:01.

The North Coast team improves to 3-1 with the result, and the win gives the Jacks a perfect Bay Area road trip after Friday's 1-0 victory against Academy of Art.

"Today was a difficult game that could've gone either way," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "Holy Names played very well and caused us problems on both ends of the field. We created some excellent chances today that could've made the game easier, but in the end Marco and Max came through for us to make the difference."

Jungemann credited the defense with limiting the Hawks' chances and said goalkeeper Chris Cherms came up big on several occasions – Cherms had four saves on the day. Steinmetz, Dairo, Daniel Allred, and Francisco Calderon all had two shots, with both of Steinmetz' being on goal.

Jungemann was also pleased at his 3-1 team's progress thus far in the non-conference portion of its schedule.

"It has been a great start to the season for us and we will look to build on the confidence we have gained as we start conference play next weekend," said Jungemann. "Our team spirit is good at this point, and we are looking forward to starting CCAA play."

Tyler Guptill, Calderon, Dairo and Cherms were named to the 2017 Golden Gate Classic All-Tournament Team for their performances this weekend.

Next up, HSU travels to Hayward, Calif., for a meeting with Cal State East Bay on Friday at 7 p.m.
