SATURDAY VS. CAL STATE EAST BAY: LIVE STATS
ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State's women's volleyball gets its first taste of conference play this week as it travels south face to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Cal State East Bay on Saturday. Friday's match begins at 7 p.m.
The Lumberjacks look to snap a streak of five consecutive losses, following the team's season-opening win against Academy of Art. Last week's West Region Volleyball Showcase pitted the Green and Gold against strong West Region competition including Saint Martin's, Notre Dame de Namur, Point Loma and Montana State Billings.
Lauren Reid leads the team in kills/set with 2.91 and points/set with 3.36, and
Jessica Lammers leads in assists/set with 5.24. In the Showcase games,
Sarah Shively had 28 digs versus Notre Dame de Namur and 20 digs against Point Loma.
"Monterey Bay and East Bay are both improved from last year," said HSU Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "Monterey had one senior last year, and its area of weakness last year was in the setting position, and they have really upgraded there. I was watching film on them this morning and they look strong, but we're going to go in optimistic and motivated and ready to do well."
Coach Wood also added that some of the younger players who didn't see court time this past weekend might earn more playing time as the squad looks to find productive combinations.
Last season, the Jacks split their season series with both the Otters and Pioneers with the home team winning each respective meeting. The Otters are 6-2 and went 3-1 this past weekend in the West Region Crossover Tournament. Monterey Bay is coming off a performance in which they allowed the fewest points in school history since the rally-scoring era (2001). The Pioneers are 6-2 and went 3-1 this past weekend in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
