Women’s Soccer Plays Monterey Bay to 1-1 Tie

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team was able to find some consolation Sunday after a tough 2-1 result in Friday's contest at Cal State East Bay, notching a 1-1 tie at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Monterey Bay's Madison Aguirre struck first at the 28:17 mark, with HSU's Rachel Herman finding a loose ball in the box and tapping it home at 60:15 for the equalizer. The teams played 20 minutes of scoreless soccer in the two overtimes.

The Jacks were able to put significant pressure forward, posting 11 shots with five of them being on goal. Sabine Postma tallied three shots, one on goal, and Alex Jenkins had two shots with both on goal.

"The response (to Friday) was really good," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "We got back to playing the type of soccer that we want to play. In the first half, there was a lot of good possession and running at the goal."

Monterey Bay's goal came, as Karver said, as a result of a quirk in the surface, as HSU's center back tripped and surrendered the ball in scoring position. However, Karver thought HSU recovered well and saw the back line push forward in the second half to create chances.

Karver noted that there were several good performances from players who haven't seen much playing time lately, saying that Herman had a fantastic game at right back, and that Jacquelyn Dompier's run for an assist Friday night propelled her into a nice game on Sunday.

"The reality is that there's not a whole lot of time for the Sunday game," said Karver, "A lot of what we had to make sure we were able to do is have the girls mentally ready to go out and fight, which was more important to this result than anything tactically or technically. From that standpoint, I think we did a good job. The girls went out and they fought hard, and we were pleased with that. But again, it's their response to the situation and their wanting to get that point."

The Jacks earned one more point toward the 18 that they will need to make the playoffs, and now face a quick turnaround as they host conference foe Sonoma State on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at noon.
