Men's Soccer Tallies First Victory of Season at Cavalier Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team bounced back from a loss to tournament host Concordia on Thursday and earned a 3-0 win against Saint Martin's in the Cavalier Classic Tournament at Tuominen Yard Saturday evening.

Newcomer Frankie Calderon, who had two scores in the second half, led the Lumberjacks' scoring effort. He notched the game's first goal at 55:04 and was assisted by Alejandro Garcia. Calderon struck again at 86:53 with the help of Isaiah Dairo. Those goals bookended Marco Silveira's tally at 78:09 unassisted, as all three Jack scores came in the second half.

"Today was a difficult game in challenging, hot weather," said HSU Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "The heat was the biggest factor in the first half for both teams, and the pace of the game was slow as a result. Our guys dug deep and found another gear in the second half. Frankie scored two great goals, and Marco had a beautiful individual effort to give us some breathing room during a difficult period in the second half."

HSU goalkeeper Chris Cherms kept a clean net, turning away all five Saint attempts in the game. The Jacks were actually outshot by the Saints 14-11, but they found ways to make their attempts count. Frankie Calderon led the Jacks with four shots, two on goal, and both Silveira and Martin Calderon managed two shots, one on goal apiece.

Jungemann also commended his defense and in particular Tyler Guptill for his strong performance in his second 90-minute game of the weekend.

"We will enjoy this for today and get back to work next week, trying to build on our second half as we go on the road again to San Francisco for two more tough games," said Jungemann.

The result moves the Lumberjacks to 1-1 on the season, and they now turn their attention to a September 8 road date in San Francisco with Academy of Art followed by a match with Holy Names on September 10.
