Women's Soccer Notches Second Victory of Lumberjack Classic

ARCATA, Calif. – On the strength of a two-goal outing from midfielder Alex Jenkins, the Humboldt State women's soccer team claimed its second Lumberjack Classic victory Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 final over Fresno Pacific.

"It's the best start we've had in awhile but really, it was a learning experience for us," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "We had young players play big minutes in big roles, and the girls learned that it doesn't always have to be pretty. Today wasn't pretty, but it's just about getting the job done and getting the three points."

Karver made special mention of the quality of the coaching staffs at Colorado Mesa and Fresno Pacific in talking about how much it meant for his squad to achieve these two victories. Humboldt State goalkeeper Katelin Talbert had a stellar outing, blanking Fresno Pacific while recording nine saves on the day, as the Jacks outshot the Sunbirds 11-10.

Jenkins' first goal came at 30:32 of the first period as she took an assist from MaKenna Dunn, corralled a rebound, and stuck it into the far right corner of the goal. With another one of her team-high six shots, four on goal, Jenkins struck again in the second at 89:23 off an assist from Rachel Herman. It was a great strike on a ball that she dribbled to to the left of the goalie before it nestled into the back of the net.

"Alex Jenkins is a special player," said Karver, "Any time you're as fast and as technical as she is you're going to have opportunities to score goals and to be fair, she probably could've had a couple more today, so credit to their goalkeeper for making some of those saves."

Karver was deferential to the positive attitude of his team as a whole during the Classic.

"We're just pleased with the way that everybody worked this weekend. Every single person that got into the game and every player on the bench was so supportive of everything that we were trying to get done on the weekend."

The Lumberjacks will next take the pitch against Oregon Tech at Klamath Falls, Ore. on September 8.
