Women’s Basketball Falls in Tough Loss Versus Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – Despite spending over 33 minutes of the game with the lead, the Humboldt State's women's basketball team was unable to earn a win against the home Cal State Los Angeles squad Friday night, falling 65-61.

The Lumberjacks, who led by as many as six in the fourth quarter, had their final advantage with 5:10 remaining at 54-53, but saw Cal State LA rally down the stretch to eke out the victory.

HSU were done in by its 30.8 percent shooting from the field, as the visitors' errant marksmanship cost them a game in which they forced Cal State LA into 24 turnovers and generated 17 points off those miscues. The Jacks turned the ball over just seven times in the game.

"We didn't play hard enough, disciplined enough, or tough enough to win the game," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I am extremely disappointed with the inconsistency of some of our players and our team. We haven't matured enough as a basketball team to know how to handle certain situations and I need to do a better job of doing whatever is necessary to be sure we are 100 percent ready every night."

Tyla Turner paced the squad with 23 points and Riann Thayer chipped in 17. Tyra Turner led the Jacks with seven rebounds, while Isamar Conde registered five assists in the game.

The Jacks had a 19-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased it to 48-38 with 2:45 left in the third quarter on a Thayer jumper. HSU was unable to put away a Golden Eagles squad that won the fourth period, 21-13.

The result drops the Jacks to 10-8 overall and 9-5 in conference play. HSU must put the loss behind it before facing Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night. The game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
