Tritons Sink Women’s Basketball in Last-Second Heartbreaker

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Despite a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds from Tyla Turner, the Humboldt State women's basketball team fell at UC San Diego on Friday night, 64-63.

The Jacks (8-6, 7-2 CCAA) took a slim lead late before they saw the final two points go to the Tritons' Kayla Sato on a pair of free throws with one second left. The loss snaps what was a seven-game winning streak for HSU, all against CCAA competition.

"This was definitely a tough loss and it hurts," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I thought our team played much better in the second half and put us in a position to win the game. Those last seconds we executed exactly what we needed to do a few different times to take San Diego out of what they were looking to do. I am very proud of our team for battling."

The Jacks contended with the top squad in the CCAA throughout, as the Tritons, now 8-0 in conference action, never gained much separation from HSU. UC San Diego took a one-point lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, and led 36-31 at the half. HSU outscored the home team 21-17 in the third period to draw within a point heading into the fourth. Defense took over as both teams had just 11 points in the final 10 minutes, respectively.

The visitors managed to stay with the CCAA's best by utilizing an attack that yielded just seven turnovers, while forcing the Tritons into 14 miscues. Turner was responsible for five of HSU's eight steals. Kindall Murie contributed 14 points for the Jacks, while Isamar Conde had a near double-double, chipping in 12 points with nine rebounds.

Next up for the Jacks is a Saturday contest at Cal State San Marcos, with a 5:30 p.m. tip.

"We don't have any time to dwell on this loss, and the maturity and character of our team will be tested tomorrow night," said Bento-Jackson.
