Women’s Basketball Falls to Cougars 68-63

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after a heartbreaking last-second loss to California Collegiate Athletic Association leader UC San Diego, Humboldt State women's basketball lost to Cal State San Marcos 68-63 Saturday night.

"We just didn't play a good basketball game tonight on either end of the floor," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We took a step backwards this weekend with our defense and in carrying out the scouting report, which I am very disappointed about. I knew tonight would be a test for us in a different way and we didn't respond well. I need to get us refocused and ready for two tough games next week."

The Cougars shot 50 percent from the field in the opening half and led 31-26 at intermission. San Marcos and HSU traded the lead four times in the first 10 minutes before the home team closed the quarter on a 6-2 run. Jovanah Arrington helped HSU trim San Marcos' lead, which grew to 11 points midway through the second quarter, with eight points off the bench.

Trailing by five at the half, HSU spent the majority of the third quarter chasing the home team. San Marcos led for the entire quarter and carried a 46-44 edge into the final period.

The Cougars' bench was the difference maker in the last 10 minutes, as the team looked for a lift from the reserves after a double-overtime loss to Chico State Friday night. HSU evened the score three times, but was never able to take the lead as the San Marcos bench scored 16 points.

Tyla Turner led all scorers with 23 points on 6-of-19 shooting, and she went 9-of-10 at the free-throw line. Mikaela Shannon (14) and Arrington (12) joined Turner with double-digit scoring totals.

HSU returns home and hosts Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
