Men’s Soccer Unable to Keep Early Lead, Falls to Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. – A motivating start went downhill as Humboldt State added a 3-1 loss to their difficult CCAA season. The Jacks dropped the match to Stanislaus State Friday night.

"We played well in the first half today and got a great goal from Max Steinmetz to take the lead," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "Stanislaus came out and was improved in the second half, and unfortunately we were unable to match their efforts."

Steinmetz recorded the first goal in the game and his first goal of the season at 37:23. Danny Allred crossed the ball to Steinmetz and gave him enough room to place a long shot from the right wing. Stanislaus brought the pressure to the visitor's side, and HSU's lead didn't last for long. Bryan Hernandez saved a shot on goal that forced back-to-back corner kicks for the Warriors. The second corner brought a high ball to the back post and a header tied the game at 44:33.

The half started with a shot from both sides before Hernandez again faced Stanislaus pressure. A shot and a save led to a second chance for the Warriors, and the ball was passed to close center and shot past Hernandez at 54:54 to make it 2-1. The frustration was apparent as the Jacks recorded nothing but fouls until the 78th minute.

Gus Baxter took a foul from Stanislaus that gave him a shot attempt off a free kick outside the box. Baxter's kick was blocked by the wall of Warriors and momentum shifted to a three-on-two breakaway toward Hernandez. Hernandez saved the first shot on goal that was deflected, but the Warriors put the next one away from close range to make it a 3-1 game at 83:23.

"We are in the middle of a string of difficult results," said Coach Jungemann. "The lack of confidence we are feeling is really affecting us. Particularly when things don't go well, like the second half."

Hernandez made eight saves and faced 18 Stanislaus shot attempts.

HSU moves to 4-7-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference play. The Green and Gold stay on the road to take on Chico State Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
