Wildcats Pounce on Men’s Soccer in 2-0 Loss

CHICO, Calif. – The California Collegiate Athletic Association is proving to be a bit of a challenge for the Humboldt State men's soccer team as it lost on the road to rival Chico State 2-0 on Sunday morning.

The Lumberjacks defense held strong for the first 15 minutes against the Wildcats. Possession settled in the visitor's zone allowing Chico State to put eight shots on HSU goalkeeper Bryan Hernandez before the Jacks managed to log one. Gus Baxter took a shot at 23:30 to add to his team-leading 30 shots this season. The Wildcats recorded a goal before the half at 36:59 when Chico took multiple shots on goal off a corner kick before the third attempt found the back of the net to make it 1-0. HSU went into the half with just two shot attempts, both taken by Baxter. The Wildcats put up 13 shots in the first.

Refreshed after intermission, HSU matched its first-half shooting total in the first two minutes of the second. Francisco Calderon logged a shot that went just high at 45:45 that kept him in line for the team's top spot right behind Baxter with 29 shot attempts.

Unfortunately, Calderon's shot attempt was matched with forward pressure by the Wildcats, and the gap widened to 2-0 at 48:31. HSU put pressure in Chico's zone allowing Devin Hauenstein to take back-to-back corner kicks. The Jacks didn't see much forward action until a shot from Hauenstein at 78:43 looked like it might give HSU a chance. Unfortunately, the Green and Gold were unable to score a goal and they dropped the game 2-0.

The Jacks put just one shot on goal to Chico's 10. Hernandez ended the game with eight saves.

HSU stands at 4-8-2 overall for the season and 1-7-2 in conference action. Sonoma State travels down to College Creek Field for the non-conference meeting on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m.
