Volleyball Opens Road Trip with 3-0 Loss to UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Another competitive effort came up short as the Humboldt State volleyball team lost to UC San Diego Friday night 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-15).

"We got off to a pretty good start tonight in set one," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We were trading back and forth with San Diego but failed to finish down the stretch, which has been the story of the season."

The Lumberjacks, who entered the match with 11 straight losses, persevered through a back and forth opening set. HSU trailed 4-1 before battling back to take an 11-10 lead following a service ace from Natalie Picone. The teams grappled for control of the action before the home team took over scoring five of the last six points on the way to a 25-21 win.

Lauren Reid scored one of her team-leading 13 kills to open the second frame. A Picone kill and a pair of Triton miscues put the Green and Gold in front 4-2, but the lead didn't last. UCSD pulled away from the visitors after the sixth tie of the game at 13-13. The home squad won the second set by a score of 25-19.

UCSD had its best effort in the third and final set as it compiled a match-best .345 hitting percentage. The Jacks never led except when it scored the opening point, and the Tritons' largest lead was 11.

HSU moves to 3-17 overall and 0-12 in conference play with Friday's result. The North Coast team continues a grueling three-match in three days stretch as it travels to Cal State San Marcos Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
