Volleyball Unable to Overcome Warriors in Road Battle

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Humboldt State volleyball saw its losing streak extended in Friday night's 3-0 loss to Stanislaus State.

The Lumberjacks (3-20, 0-15 CCAA) suffered their 15th consecutive loss and will only have one more opportunity to capture a road conference victory this season with Saturday's trip to Chico State.

"We had another frustrating outcome after strong performances in the first and the third set," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We put ourselves in a position to win and then proceeded to give points away to finish sets. When we get close to a victory we tense up and we falter time and time again.  We have to learn to finish. We are days away from the end of this season, and we remain hopeful that we can get the elusive win before we're done."

HSU scored the first point of the match, but was immediately forced to play from behind as Stanislaus State answered with a five-point burst. Trailing 8-4, a pair of Carla Crespo service aces powered the North Coast squad to six straight points and gave it a 10-8 advantage. The Warriors responded with five of the next six points to move in front 13-11. HSU kept it close against the home team, but Stanislaus State scored five consecutive points to earn a 25-19 victory. Lauren Reid recorded three of the team's seven kills in the opening set.

The second set featured five ties en route to a 7-7 score, but the Warriors hit a match-high .412 to take control and earn the win. Sierra Adams and Jordon Wilson combined for 11 of Stanislaus State's 17 kills in the second frame.

The Green and Gold never led in the deciding third set, but they showed determination and a willingness to fight. Down 15-9, HSU stormed back and twice pulled within one point of the Warriors at 19-18 and 21-20. Stanislaus State capitalized on a pair of attack errors on its way to a 25-21 win.

HSU heads to Chico, Calif., to face the arch rival Wildcats Saturday at 5 p.m.
