Gators Top Volleyball in Three

SAN FRANCISCO – The Humboldt State volleyball team struggled against San Francisco State before falling 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-13) on the road in Friday night's match.

"Tonight we were never able to get any type of rhythm going against SF," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We really struggled to pass the ball, which resulted in a high number of errors offensively. We have been relying on our tough serving to create point-scoring opportunities, but when the side out game isn't working, we limit our chances to get to the service line."

The first set was a testament to the Jacks struggles this season as they scored 10 points to the Gator's 25. Despite beginning the set with a service ace from Natalie Picone, who leads the team with 19 this season, the North Coast team struggled to push past three points. Picone finished the night leading the Jacks with seven kills. San Francisco State took a 12-3 advantage before a kill by Hannah Cantrell made it four on the board for HSU. The final 25-10 sparked a night of unease for HSU.

The Green and Gold pushed in the second set and limited the Gators to two before putting a point on the board off a kill from Savannah Horton. Though tied at three-all early, before long HSU saw the gap widen to 12-6 in the Gators' favor. Odelia Ryan recorded a service ace but it was a service error by San Francisco State that brought the score within five at 14-9. HSU watched the points rack up to 22-10 before a sudden burst of energy managed to get them closer than ever. Cantrell came back in the game, and the Jacks held the Gators at 22 while they worked their way up to 16. Picone was present in the last plays as she recorded a kill and a block on an attack error to bring the score to 24-19. A service error on Ryan put the set away for in San Francisco State's favor, 25-19.

The third set mirrored the first as HSU struggled keeping up with the Gators. San Francisco State doubled its points on the Jacks early, and HSU was unable to break past the halfway point 10 times before falling 25-13. It was a kill from Picone and an assist from team leader Juliana Bertolucci that finished the scoring for HSU. Bertolucci leads the team with 328 assists.

"We face a very tough, veteran opponent tomorrow night in East Bay, and we have to execute better in serve receive and we need to limit our hitting errors," said Coach Wood.

The Jacks stay in the bay tomorrow to meet Cal State East Bay for a 5 p.m. match in Hayward, Calif.
