Volleyball Falls to Cal State East Bay in Three

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team fell to Cal State East Bay 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-20) on Saturday evening.

"This weekend was very long and tough for us," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We played two solid teams and we continue to struggle to find the lineup that can get it done on a consistent basis. Our group is extremely resilient and we will never quit on one another. We are looking forward to playing at home this coming weekend."

HSU struggled to find a rhythm in the first set and watched East Bay put up 10 early on. Team leaders Natalie Picone and Juliana Bertolucci combined for a kill to put the Lumberjacks on the board. Bertolucci came back and helped Odelia Ryan record a kill to make it 11-2. Taylor Yancey entered the match and helped put a few more points on the board at 21-6, and two more points by Summer Hansen and Bertolucci rounded out the score for the first set at 25-9.

The Jacks found some momentum in set two. The score was kept close throughout the early part until the North Coast squad saw an 11-5 deficit grow to 17-5. A kill by Hannah Cantrell brought it to 17-6, but it took two bad serves and a bad set that gave HSU their next three points. Cantrell ranks third on the team's leaderboard for most kills. Ryan landed the final two points for HSU, but it ultimately watched the second set end 25-12.

The third set proved to be the Jacks closest chance for a win as they quickly found their groove and allowed just two  as they racked up seven. Emma Flewell recorded the seventh point backed up by Bertolucci. Horton, Cantrell, and Yancey recorded the next three points and HSU saw the score doubled over East Bay at 11-5. The Pioneers closed the gap over the next several plays and at 17, the set was tied and HSU lost its lead. The set closed out at 25-20 in the home team's favor.

HSU returns to Lumberjack Arena to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, Oct. 11.
