Men’s Soccer Falls to San Bernardino 3-0

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team lost to Cal State San Bernardino 3-0 following a statistically even game at College Creek Field.

Goalkeeper Bryan Hernandez made his return after taking over a week off to rest an injury, and it was clear he had his defender's support fending off San Bernardino's repeated shot attempts and corner kicks in the first 10 minutes. Hernandez has recorded 47 saves in the season and holds an .810 save percentage. The Jacks were challenged at 16:01 when the Coyotes capitalized off a short cross from the left side that was tapped past a diving Hernandez for 1-0 San Bernardino. Humboldt ended the half tied with CSUSB for shots at nine apiece.

The second half proved frustrating for the Jacks as the focus seemed to shift from defending the play to pulling the foul. HSU fouled three times in two minutes to start the second half, and San Bernardino matched their grittiness with precision. At 55:28, the Jacks saw the score grow to a two-point deficit off a cross from the right side that was fired past Hernandez at close distance. A scuffle between Max Steinmetz and CSUSB Ika Kvavilashvili drew a yellow card for each not long after. The Jacks answered with pressure up front, but they failed to finish despite attempts from Isaiah Dairo, Marco Silveira and Frankie Calderon in the 66th minute. Dairo and Calderon finished the game with two shots, and Silveira finished with three along with Steinmetz, Gus Baxter and Israel Gonzalez. Following continued pressure in the visitor's zone, a quick pass in front of the home goal at 69:07 pushed the score to 3-0.

HSU got a scoring opportunity from Gonzalez at 78:24 as he shot from far right with lots of space hoping to avoid the shutout. What looked like a goal going under the crossbar was tipped out by San Bernardino's goalkeeper Jacob Huber. The Jacks finished the game down 3-0 but were able to match the Coyotes shot attempts again with 11 in the second half. Both teams finished with 20 total shot attempts. Hernandez recorded 10 saves while Huber finished with 15.

Friday's result pushes the Jacks to 4-5-2 overall as they prepare to meet Cal Poly Pomona back at College Creek Field on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.
