Men’s Soccer Falls to Broncos in Closing Minutes

ARCATA, Calif. – In a 90-minute nailbiter, the Humboldt State men's soccer team fell to Cal Poly Pomona 2-1 Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field.

"Our guys fought very hard today against a good Pomona team," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We created chances and defended well together. It's a tough result, and the stats and scoreline don't reflect the effort our boys put into this game."

The Jacks took the lead when Gus Baxter collided with Pomona goalie Jakob Hansen and headed the ball past him 15:50 into the match. Baxter came down hard on Hansen and left the game due to injury. Dylan Tovani relieved Baxter and Hansen was replaced with Skyler Gibbons-Stovall in goal.

Pomona applied offensive pressure and answered before intermission. Gabriel Castillo took a direct shot with the help of an Omer Green cross to make it 1-1 with 41:53 on the clock. HSU's senior goalkeeper Bryan Hernandez faced 11 shots from Pomona and recorded eight saves before the half.

HSU held the visitors to a tie and kept momentum on defense but struggled to compete in the box. The Jacks looked hopeful for a lead when captain Danny Allred took a pass in the center outside the box, pushed it past four Broncos and passed it to Devon Hauenstein at the left post before he shot it just wide of the net. This was Hauenstein's first game back after being out for three.

The Lumberjacks put eight shots on goal during the second half, but faced 15 more shots from Pomona until 87:06. A cross from Cyro Oliveira intended for Jason Ramos was tipped by HSU defender Martin Calderon, deflecting it into the Jacks own goal for a 2-1 score with minutes left.

"It's unfortunate, but it is the reality of playing in our conference – every game is a battle," said Jungemann.

The loss puts the Jacks at 4-6-2 as they head down to Turlock, Calif., to face Stanislaus State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before visiting Chico State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
