Women’s Basketball Falls to Concordia, 72-71, in Final Seconds

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team dropped Tuesday night's meeting with Concordia (Ore.), 72-71, in Lumberjack Arena.

The Lumberjacks started slow and trailed by 14 points after the first quarter. HSU outscored the visitors 18-7 in the second and trailed by three at the half. The Green and Gold were unable to overcome the deficit and surrendered the game-winning baskets in the game's closing seconds.

"Unfortunately we dug ourselves into a hole in the first quarter with Concordia," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "They jumped out to a huge lead and shot a high field goal percentage. I think a lot of that had to do with our lack of defensive intensity, but we bounced back. I knew we just had to get stops to really get us going, which is what we did. I'm proud of our effort."

The Jacks trailed from the start but gained momentum going into the second quarter. HSU outscored Concordia 18-7 in the second quarter to pull within three, 32-29, at intermission. Isa Conde had a team-high 16 points and went 8-for-10 at the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes of action.

"We came in and played stronger in the second half," said junior Alexia Thrower. "We just came off more strong in the second half, and it was enough to give us a kick start."

HSU minimized the gap throughout the third and kept close competition into the fourth. The teams had four lead changes in the game and three in the fourth quarter. The home team kept the pressure on offense and had the fans at Lumberjack Arena on their feet when on defense. The nailbiter took every last second and Turner attempted a layup as time expired, and the Jacks suffered their first loss of the season.

"A positive of tonight was definitely movement with the ball," said senior Isamar Conde. "We were working with the ball and that's how we got our great shots. We can improve on defense, though tonight was an improvement from last week."

Despite finishing the game just one point short, HSU struggled from the free-throw line and connected on 24-of-39 opportunities.

Tonight's loss puts the Jacks at 2-1 before they head down to Sonoma State to take on the Seawolves on Friday, Nov. 23. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
