ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Twenty-two point deficit, no problem. Almost. Humboldt State men's basketball overcame a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit but the rally fell short in Friday's 69-66 loss to Sonoma State.
"Our team showed poise and resiliency during our comeback run tonight against Sonoma State," said HSU Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "We dug ourselves in a huge hole in the first half but came out the second half with energy and belief. I credit the team top to bottom and our overall effort showing some mental toughness not letting this game get out of reach."
HSU shooters were ice cold in the first half shooting 29.6 percent from the field, and the Green and Gold trailed 38-20 at intermission. The Lumberjacks (3-3, 0-1 CCAA) trailed by a game-high 22 points to begin the second half, but
Kameron Curl's 14 second-half points helped the North Coast team even the score in the final minute.
Jackson Strong knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 66-all with 38 seconds to play, and Sonoma State answered with a pair of game-winning free throws.
The Jacks connected on 51.6 percent of their second-half shot attempts and was 5-of-11 from outside the arc.
Justin Everett matched Curl's final scoring output with 16 points.
Calvin Young II joined them with 11 points and a pair of rim-rocking dunks.
HSU visits Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, Nov. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
