Men’s Basketball Defeats Cal State San Marcos, Earns First CCAA Win

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The Humboldt State men's basketball team captured its first conference victory defeating Cal State San Marcos 86-75 inside the Sports Center Thursday night.

"I am extremely proud of our focus during our week of preparation," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "It paid off tonight with a nice performance top to bottom."

The Green and Gold proved why they are the California Collegiate Athletic Association's highest scoring team after jumping out to an early 21-9 lead which they never surrendered. Kameron Curl and Jackson Strong led the efficient attack and each contributed 14 points as the Lumberjacks led 51-32 at the break.

San Marcos rallied in the second half and outscored the North Coast squad 43-35, but the Lumberjacks prevented the Cougar comeback. HSU shooters converted on 57.6 percent of their shot attempts and were 10-of-21 from beyond the arc.

Curl led the Jacks with 20 points followed by Strong who finished with 18. LJ Williams corralled a game-high 13 rebounds, and Jack Kaub dished out six assists in 16 minutes of action.

"It was nice to see us get a win in front of a nice Lumberjack crowd down here in San Diego," said Kinder. "We have the luxury of having a full day to prepare on the road for Saturday's game against a very talented San Bernardino team."

Humboldt State will try to maintain their momentum as they wrap up their Southern California road trip with a game against Cal State San Bernardino Saturday at 3 p.m.
