Mean Green Too Much for Lumberjacks in Rainbow Classic Opener

HONOLULU – The Humboldt State men's basketball team began their Hawaiian road trip with a 93-48 loss at the hands of North Texas Friday night in game one of the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic.

The Lumberjacks opened the Classic hoping they could hang with the NCAA Division I opposition and for the first five minutes they did. HSU jumped out to a 10-7 lead, but North Texas had different plans as it settled in with 18 unanswered points. The Mean Green won the first half turnover battle committing four while forcing 13. North Texas shot 62 percent from deep, converting 8-of-13 attempts. The North Coast squad tried to keep themselves alive with 10 3-point shots of its own but saw none go through the cylinder. HSU went into the locker room trailing 49-23.

HSU failed to recover from its first-half deficit and shot 33 percent as a team. North Texas continued its relentless play scoring 33 points off turnovers compared to Humboldt's 12.

Calvin Young II had an efficient night as he led his team with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Zachariah Christian scored 10 points and recorded five boards to go with two assists and a pair of blocks before fouling out of the match.

North Texas had a well-balanced offense with five players notching double-digit scoring figures. Umoja Gibson led the Mean Green attack with 27 points as he shot lights out from beyond the arc with six made treys on as many attempts.

The Jacks will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they face the University of Hawaii at 9 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center.
