Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Zac Alfers

Jacks Roll Past Bethesda, Improve to 6-0 at Home

ARCATA, Calif. – It was all business Wednesday night, as the Humboldt State men's basketball team rolled past Bethesda University 120-59 in Lumberjack Arena.

"I think this game continues to give us momentum," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "Having a home winning streak is great for the fans during their holiday break. After our Chico win, we wanted to keep our momentum going which I think we have done with our last two games."

The end result was never in jeopardy as the North Coast squad jumped out to a commanding 37-5 lead that was highlighted by an alley-oop pass from Jackson Strong that was finished by Trevon Bentley. The Jacks were dominant down low, outscoring Bethesda 32-4 in the paint as the home team held the Flames to just 26.2 percent shooting in the first half. HSU went into the break up 61-20.

The Green and Gold remained hungry as they came out of the locker room and began the second frame with 12 unanswered points. The Jacks shot the lights out of the building as they finished with their best shooting night of the season, converting 48-of-78 attempts for a red-hot 61.5 percent.

Humboldt forced 19 Bethesda turnovers, and the home squad made the most of their opportunities as they turned the visitor miscues into 30 points. It was a complete team victory as 13 Lumberjacks saw game action with the reserves adding 72 points off the bench.

Bentley led the way with 18 points on an 8-of-10 shooting night to go with a game-high seven rebounds. Nine players recorded nine points or more, and junior guard John Dong dished out a team-best six assists in 12 minutes of action.

"You look at LJ (Williams) and at his minutes early in the season, and he was getting limited minutes," said Kinder. "He continued to practice hard, and he waited for his opportunity. When we called his number he played extremely well. That's what happened tonight and the last few games, these guys are getting extra minutes, and able to seize their opportunity, and catch the eyes of the coaching staff."

The result is good for Jacks' fifth consecutive victory as they move to 9-4 overall, with a 4-2 record in CCAA play.  HSU will take a week off for holiday break before they return to conference action Saturday, Dec. 29 against UC San Diego. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
