High-Scoring Tritons Too Much for HSU Men’s Basketball

LA JOLLA, Calif. – A balanced scoring effort from UC San Diego's high-powered offense snapped the Humboldt State men's basketball team's five-game winning streak Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons topped the visitors 85-62.

San Diego unleashed a 3-point barrage against HSU in the lopsided result connecting on 15-of-27 attempts from outside the arc. The Lumberjacks (9-5, 4-3 CCAA) trailed by only eight points at halftime, 34-26, before the home squad put the game away. The Tritons outscored the Green and Gold 51-36 in the second half.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association's 3-point shooting leader entering Saturday's game, San Diego fell a few treys short of its season-best, but it was enough to deal HSU its first loss since Dec. 1. Christian Bayne led the Tritons with 18 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown.

Chris Hansen drained a 3-pointer to get things started for the Tritons, and they saw their lead grow to six points, 15-9, with 13:56 left in the first half. When things weren't going right for the Jacks, they turned to their consistent impact player in senior Justin Everett. Everett sank a jumper to make it a four-point affair, 19-15, with just under eight minutes remaining in the half before San Diego went on a 15-7 spurt. Layups from Hunter Johnson and Jackson Strong brought the Tritons' advantage to single digits at intermission, 34-26.

HSU twice trimmed San Diego's lead to six points early in the second half, but the home team's offensive firepower gave it the upper hand. The Tritons went on a 22-8 run and took a commanding 20-point lead, 58-38, right before the 12-minute media timeout. San Diego led by as many as 25 points in the final 20 minutes and never again let the North Coast team get closer than 16 points.

Everett finished the game with 18 points and eight boards, and Johnson joined him in double figures with 10 points. HSU shot 35.1 percent from the field and made 18.8 percent of its baskets from outside the arc.

The Jacks continue their road trip with a visit to Cal Poly Pomona Monday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
