Warriors Edge Women’s Basketball in Overtime

TURLOCK, Calif. – In a defensive battle that came down to the final 13 seconds of overtime, the Humboldt State's women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Stanislaus State Saturday night on the road, 51-50.

The result saw HSU fall to 13-10 overall, 12-6 in the CCAA conference, while Stanislaus State improved to 10-14, 7-11 with the upset.

"I learned a lot about our team tonight," said Lumberjack Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We showed mental weakness in numerous different areas and you just can't win games not being mentally tough."

A Caitlin Keding 3-pointer at that 13-second mark of OT proved to be the Lumberjacks' undoing. Keding connected on 3-of-5 long-range attempts on the night. Isamar Conde split a pair of defenders and had a chance with a last-second layup attempt for the Jacks, but it missed the mark. Conde had an exceptional night amidst HSU's offensive struggles, shooting 50 percent from outside the arc on her way to a team-best 21 points.

Kindall Murie scored all nine of the Jacks' first quarter points, but couldn't get a bucket to fall after that opening period. Tyla Turner was the only Jack besides Conde scoring double-figures with 10, but struggled from the field, finishing 3-of-15. Conde and Jovanah Arrington both finished with seven rebounds for the visiting side.

Neither team gained much separation in the first half, with HSU leading 9-8 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The Jacks had their largest lead at the 7:13 mark of the second, going up 17-10 on a Tyla Turner layup, but Stanislaus State rallied to tie the score at 20 heading into halftime.

The home team went up 31-24 with 5:28 left in the third before the Jacks took the lead briefly and then knotted the contest at 34 heading into the fourth. Neither team was able to sustain more than a four-point lead in the quarter, and after a desperation Tyla Turner heave from downtown didn't find the mark as regulation time expired, the squads went into OT deadlocked at 44. Another Keding trey with 17 seconds left in regulation had evened the score for the Warriors.

Overtime was tight, with the Jacks briefly going on top 49-46 with 28 seconds left on a Tyra Turner layup before a Warrior layup set the stage for Keding's heroics.

The Jacks lost despite forcing 27 Warrior turnovers, as they were only able to hit just 27.5 percent of their field goals on the night.

HSU is now off until its CCAA home game with Cal State San Marcos on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. tip time. The game will feature a Play4Kay promotion to raise awareness for breast cancer, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
