Softball Struggles in Home-Opening Twinbill

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball team was blanked in its home opener, 9-0, and lost the nightcap to UC San Diego, 11-7, Friday afternoon at the HSU Softball Field.

The Tritons, behind starting pitcher Robyn Wampler, dominated the first game. UC San Diego belted a pair of early home runs, including a two-run shot from Mikaila Reyes, to take a 3-0 lead through four frames.

Bobbi Aguire, who hit a solo bomb in the fourth, drove in three more runs on RBI singles and went 4-for-4 at the dish to lead the Tritons' offense to a 9-0 lead.

Wampler limited HSU batters to just two hits in her complete game shutout. The Jacks threatened with the bases loaded and one out in the first, but that was as close as the home team got to putting runs on the board.

Lexee Sheiring and Jasmine Hill both pitched in the first game, but neither found success in the circle. Sheiring took the loss and allowed three runs in 3.1 innings.

UCSD struck first in game two and led 4-1 after two innings. Rachel Bennett got the start for HSU, but didn't make it past the second. Bennett surrendered five hits and four earned runs.

A Rylie Carlier run-scoring single in the third and a solo bomb from Winona Vigil pulled HSU within a run of the visitors after four. Vigil's home run was her team-leading fourth of the season.

HSU rebounded in the sixth with a three-run, bases-clearing single from Hanna Holland, and Holland scored on a UCSD's second miscue of the inning two batters later.

A four-run seventh propelled the Tritons to the win. UCSD had five hits off Hill, who entered the game in relief of Bennett in the third. Hill took the loss, her first of the season, and she tossed a season-high 5.0 innings.

The Jacks continue their homestand with two more games Saturday afternoon. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m.
