Softball Brings the Fight to Tritons, Splits Series

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State softball recovered from a Friday sweep and earned two wins and a series split versus visiting UC San Diego Saturday. The Lumberjacks won the first game 4-3 in eight innings and topped the Tritons 6-3 in the series finale.

The North Coast team improved to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

HSU struggled mightily Friday afternoon, but Head Coach Shelli Sarchett was able to turn around the team's fortunes by demanding her team face the challenge head on.

"We talked about last weekend at Dominguez Hills and what we were capable of," said Sarchett. "I told them to show me how they face adversity. You relax at practice, so treat it like practice. Dance a little bit if that helps. I wish we would stop waiting until Saturday to play hard. I know we are capable of winning games. When we come out and play Humboldt softball look what happens. We have to trust ourselves the minute we set foot on the field on Friday and not wait until Saturday."

The Jacks took a 1-0 lead behind a Halle Williams single in the second inning of the early game, but the Tritons battled back for a 3-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the third.

Hits were at a premium in the third game of the homestand, but the Green and Gold manufactured runs with saavy baserunning. Micaela Harris stole home in the third and avoided an inning-ending double play. A Rylie Carlier ground-rule double followed by a Lona Dengler double to centerfield evened the score at 3-3 after four innings.

Stellar pitching from reliever Jasmine Hill powered into extra innings. Hill took over in the top of the third and finished the game with 5.2 frames of scoreless relief. She earned the win, her first of the season.

Danica Grier provided the game-winning RBI in the eighth with a single up the middle that scored Illa Haley from second.

In game two, the Tritons built a 3-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the third, and HSU's run came on a Kelly Sonneman RBI double in the second inning.

The Jacks trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom half of the second when Harris scored on a miscue by the Tritons' shortstop. HSU took over in the fourth inning behind a two-run double from Williams, and she later scored on a fielder's choice to give the home team a 5-3 lead.

Sonneman bunted the game's final run home in the fifth to make the final 6-3. She and Williams had two hits apiece in the series finale.

Hill captured her second win of the season in the nightcap as she tossed 2.2 innings of one-hit ball.

HSU hosts Stanislaus State next week, and first pitch for game one is Friday at noon.
