Men’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – After coming out of the blocks quickly Friday night with a 13-4 lead, the Humboldt State men's basketball team was done in by host Sonoma State's hot shooting en route to a 101-83 loss.

The loss dropped the Jacks to 9-18 overall, 6-15 CCAA while Sonoma improved to 10-15, 8-13.

Ashton Pomrehn led four Jacks in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from downtown, and Justin Everett notched 12 while both Kameron Curl and Romario Wilson had 11.

The Seawolves shot 53.6 percent from the field in the game, and hit the defensive glass for 34 defensive rebounds to the Jacks' 23. They out-assisted HSU 24 to 13.

While the Jacks only shot 40.3 percent from the field, their three-point shooting was solid, as they knocked down 39.1 percent from deep.

HSU's early run saw Curl knock down three free throws to give the visitors their nine-point advantage at the 16:02 mark, but Sonoma quickly rallied and took their first lead of 17-16 with 12:50 to go in the half. The Seawolves continued to build momentum through the rest of the first half, taking a 47-26 lead into the break.

"I thought we came out prepared and we looked good at the start," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We built a significant lead and we executed well. Just after our first substitution we lost our rhythm and our confidence. Sonoma took off for the rest of the half in front of a nice crowd."

Sonoma stayed hot through the first part of the second half, and went up 77-44 with 13:19 to go before the Jacks showed fight in establishing a 20-4 run to close the gap to 81-64 on a Jalen Terry bucket and free throw with 8:14 left.

HSU got no closer than 15 the rest of the way, though, as the home team's offense was too much to handle on this night.

"We talked about pride at halftime," said Kinder. "What does that mean? Whether you are playing in the park, the gym or in an NCAA basketball game in late February you fight, scrap and play with heart. We played with pride in the last 20 minutes of the game, but we never really threatened Sonoma."

The Jacks now travel to San Francisco State to close their season for a Saturday game with a 7:30 p.m. tip time.

"The good news is we have another opportunity to come out and play better," said Kinder. "We get to represent each other as a collective team for another 24 hours. That's what we talked about after the game. I stressed the 'fun factor.' You choose Division II for a reason and I want these guys to compete and have fun with their teammates tomorrow night."
