Women’s Basketball Falls in First Leg of Road Swing

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – After rallying to claim a lead late in the first half, the Humboldt State women's basketball team was bested 65-57 Friday night by a Sonoma State team that did not falter down the stretch, outscoring the Jacks 23-13 in the fourth quarter.

Sonoma took a 13-6 lead early and led 17-14 at the conclusion of one quarter before the Jacks made their move. The visitors outscored the Seawolves 16-7 in the second quarter, and took a 30-24 advantage with 37 seconds left in the half on an Arrington jumper.

Sonoma countered in the third, outscoring the Jacks 18-14, and HSU took its last lead at 44-42 with 47 seconds left in the quarter on a Tyla Turner layup. The fourth quarter proved to be the road squad's undoing, however, as the Seawolves took their biggest lead of the night, 56-45, with 2:41 left.

Free throws aided the Seawolves as they dominated the game's final 10 minutes. Sonoma went to the line 29 times and converted 18 of those opportunities. In comparison, HSU went to the charity stripe just 12 times in the contest.

Tyla Turner led HSU scorers with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Jovanah Arrington chipped in 14 and Isamar Conde had 10 points. Conde recorded a double-double on the night with her 10 rebounds.

Both teams struggled from 3-point range in the game, with Sonoma hitting just 2-of-11 and the Jacks connecting on just 3-of-20 attempts. However, HSU connected on 42.3 percent of its field goals and Sonoma State shot 43.4 percent from the field.

The loss drops the Jacks to 14-12 overall, 13-8 CCAA conference, and HSU now travels to San Francisco State for a game with the Gators Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
