Women’s Basketball Continues Winning Streak at Home

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State's women's basketball certainly had no letdown following its dramatic 76-73 overtime victory against Cal State East Bay on Thursday night. The Lumberjacks won their third straight besting Cal State Monterey Bay in Lumberjack Arena 64-42 on Saturday evening.

Isamar Conde led the Green and Gold offense with 19 points, shooting 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Tyla Turner contributed 18 points and went 3-of-5 from downtown, and she also collected a team-best 12 rebounds. The two were the only HSU players in double figures.

The Jack defense was especially stout on this evening, limiting Monterey Bay to 16-of-52 shooting from the field (30.8 percent) and holding the Otters to 4-of-16 from 3-point range (25 percent). The HSU defense also had 11 steals, six more than its opponent, and the Jacks outrebounded the Otters 42 to 36.

"I was pleased with our defensive effort, especially in the first half, in particular starting the game," said Lumberjack Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "It's something that's always a focus of ours, as we certainly were not happy with how we started the first half the other night against East Bay. We wanted to come out and get the first punch and really send a message on the defensive end."

The victory moved the Jacks to 13-9 overall, 12-5 CCAA conference, as the Otters fell to 6-17, 5-13 CCAA.

HSU jumped out to a 16-6 lead with 3:18 left in the first period on a Tyra Turner layup, before Monterey Bay rallied to make it 20-15 at the conclusion of one. HSU really hit its stride in the second quarter, pushing the lead out to 18, 33-15, at the 5:02 mark, as Riann Thayer hit a trey. The score stood at 40-23 at the break.

In the first minute of the second half, HSU expanded its lead to 22, 45-23, as Tyra Turner hit a 3-pointer. The Jacks cruised through the rest of the quarter and took a 52-34 advantage into the fourth.

In the final stanza, HSU never let its lead slip below 15 points and took it to as much as 25 in the final minute on a Tyla Turner 3-pointer.

"I was pleased with the effort we showed in converting defensive stops to transition opportunities for us," said Bento-Jackson. "We are certainly a better team when we continue to push the pressure on our opponents defensively. This was a good win for us tonight. It was important for us to defend our home court this week, therefore, it's great to get these two wins. We will enjoy this yet stay focused and be ready to get back to work on Monday to prepare for Stanislaus."

The Jacks are now off until next Saturday, Feb. 10, as they travel to Turlock to take on Stanislaus State with a 5:30 p.m. tip time.
