Softball Captures First Win of 2018, Earns Saturday Split

LAS VEGAS -- After a rocky opening day of the 2018 season, the Humboldt State softball team earned its first win and a Saturday split at the Desert Stinger Tournament. The Lumberjacks defeated Nebraska Kearney, 12-4, and lost to University of Mary, 7-2.

The Lumberjacks (1-3) struck first in Saturday's win versus the Lopers. Hanna Holland opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first and HSU added five more runs in the fourth. A Lona Dengler home run, Holland two-run double and Halle Williams RBI singles put the Green and Gold ahead 7-1 after four innings.

Nebraska Kearney pulled within three runs in the bottom half of the frame, but HSU added to its lead late to secure the win. Amber Orchard launched her first home run of the season in the fifth, a solo shot, and the Jacks plated three runs in the seventh.

Orchard, Holland and Illa Haley had multi-hit performances in the 12-4 victory. Lexee Sheiring got the start, but it was Rachel Bennett that earned the win with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.

HSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against University of Mary. Micaela Harris slapped a RBI single up the middle to score Kelly Sonneman and give the Jacks a first inning advantage.

The Marauders evened the score in the bottom of the first, and HSU once again took the lead in the fourth inning with a RBI double courtesy of Danica Grier. Grier finished the game 3-for-3 at the dish.

HSU committed three errors in the final four frames cost the North Coast team a chance at a Saturday sweep. The Marauders scored five runs in the sixth en route to the win.

Sam Sarmiento started the nightcap in the circle and tossed 5.1 innings. She surrendered six hits and allowed three runs, one earned, in the loss.

The Green and Gold aim to finish the Desert Stinger Tournament on a winning note Sunday versus Fort Lewis. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
