Softball Extends Winning Streak to Seven with Doubleheader Sweep

HAYWARD, Calif. – Freshman standout Micaela Harris drove in five runs as Humboldt State swept Cal State East Bay in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader. The Lumberjacks won the first game, 8-3, and used a Harris homer to power past the Pioneers in game two, 3-2.

"We are starting to play softball the Humboldt way," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We are getting contributions from up and down the lineup and taking advantage of extra opportunities. I have to give credit to our pitchers today. They are really starting to trust their defense as well as trusting in their own ability."

HSU improved to 14-9 overall and 10-6 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with Saturday's results.

The North Coast team built a 7-0 lead after two innings in the series opener. HSU scored four in the first and three more in the second. Danica Grier and Kelly Sonnemann hit RBI singles in the first frame, and an error and run-scoring singles from Harris and Rylie Carlier put the Jacks ahead 7-0.

Hanna Holland lifted an RBI double into centerfield in the seventh for the games final run.

Freshman Lexee Sheiring is riding a wave of solid pitching performances and found more success in the circle Saturday. Sheiring limited the Pioneers to just three hits in the first four innings, but the home team scored three runs late. She earned her sixth victory of the year and fanned four in 7.0 innings.

Offense was at a premium in game two, but Harris came through with the go-ahead hit in the sixth. With two outs, the freshman from Rocklin hit her fourth homer of the season to left field.

"Micaela came up with a big hit in the second game right when we needed it," said Sarchett. "She had trouble adjusting in her first two at-bats, but she made the adjustment and it paid off for us."

Jasmine Hill tossed a complete game in the nightcap. The senior surrendered four hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out a pair. She improved her record to 5-2 with the decision.

HSU resumes the series with East Bay Sunday at noon.
