Softball Drops Two, Splits Series with Pioneers

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball program saw its winning streak come to an end with a pair of losses to Cal State East Bay Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers took game three of the series 15-1 in five innings and edged the Jacks in extra innings 4-3.

HSU moved to 14-11 overall and 10-8 in conference play with the losses.

Danica Grier hit an RBI single through the left side with two outs to give HSU a 1-0 advantage in the first inning of the early game.

The Pioneers answered with six runs, all against starter Lexee Sheiring, in the first and added to their lead in every inning. East Bay finished the game with 14 hits and three batters drove in three runs apiece.

Abby Greer limited the Green and Gold to just one run and four hits.

HSU struck first in the series finale with an RBI single courtesy of Lona Dengler. The Jacks went into the second tied 1-1, but a Hanna Holland sacrifice fly to centerfield put the visitors ahead 2-1.

Dengler gave the Jacks some breathing room with her second hit of the game, another run-scoring single, to make it 3-1 in the fifth.

The Pioneers rallied with two runs on four hits in the sixth inning to force extra innings, and East Bay took advantage of a Jacks error in the ninth to score the game winner.

Jasmine Hill took the loss and logged 8.2 innings. She allowed 12 hits and four runs, three of which were earned.

HSU will face Academy of Art in a non-conference doubleheader Monday at 11 a.m.
