Lumberjack Bats Quiet Versus Urban Knights

BRISBANE, Calif. – Humboldt State softball concluded its eight-game road swing with a pair of losses to Academy of Art Monday. The Lumberjacks were shutout in the first game, 3-0, and dropped game two by a score of 9-1 in six innings.

Monday's losses move the Green and Gold to 14-13 overall.

HSU was hitless through the first four frames of game one, and the North Coast team managed just four hits in the loss.

The Urban Knights plated all three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Academy of Art showed its patience at the plate driving in all of its runs with two outs.

HSU loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but was unable to drive in a run.

Lexee Sheiring tossed six innings, allowed two earned runs and gave up eight hits to the home team.

A Mariah Tovar squeeze bunt scored Lona Dengler from third to give HSU a 1-0 advantage in game two. Dengler was one of four Jacks with a base hit in the game, and she recorded HSU's only extra-base hit.

Academy of Art took control of the game with two runs in the second and four more in the third frame. Jasmine Hill, the Jacks' game two starter, took the loss after surrendering five runs in 2.1 innings.

The Urban Knights added two runs in the fifth against reliever Sam Sarmiento, and they scored their final run off Rachel Bennett in the sixth.

HSU visits Turlock to compete in the annual Tournament of Champions this weekend. The Green and Gold face Northwest Nazarene Friday at 9 a.m.
