Softball Splits Day One of Tournament of Champions Action

TURLOCK, Calif. – Humboldt State softball opened the Tournament of Champions with a split against Northwest Nazarene and Simon Fraser. The Nighthawks topped the Lumberjacks 5-1 in the early game and HSU rebounded with a 6-2 victory over The Clan in game two.

A Winona Vigil solo home run in the sixth inning was the highlight of the first game. Lexee Sheiring took the loss and surrendered a three-run homer to the Nighthawks in the fourth inning. Sheiring logged 3.1 innings and gave up three runs on four hits.

The only multi-hit performance versus Northwest Nazarene came courtesy of Micaela Harris. The freshman went 2-for-3 at the dish and stole a base, her team-leading 18th of the season.

HSU snapped its five-game losing streak in the second game of the afternoon against Simon Fraser.

The game was scoreless for the first three frames, but the North Coast team got on the board in the fourth. Vigil singled, stole second and third base and came home on a throwing error before the next batter left the box.

Simon Fraser plated two runs in the bottom of the frame off HSU starter Jasmine Hill. Hill spun 7.0 innings of two-run ball, one earned, and fanned four. She picked up her sixth victory of the season.

Mariah Tovar evened the score with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, and Hanna Holland drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Jacks a 3-2 advantage. The Jacks added three runs in the seventh to put the game firmly in the win column.

Three Jacks finished with two hits in the win, including Amber Orchard, Vigil and Tovar, and the team finished with nine total.

HSU faces Azusa Pacific Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. game against Concordia (Ore.).
