Softball Falls to Saint Martin’s, Concordia Sunday

TURLOCK, Calif. – Humboldt State softball wrapped its Tournament of Champions schedule with a pair of losses Sunday afternoon. The Lumberjacks (15-17) lost to Saint Martin's 10-8 in eight innings before dropping game two versus Concordia (Calif.) 4-0.

Rylie Carlier and Winona Vigil drove in two runs apiece in the Lumberjacks' loss to the Saints. Carlier squeezed home the game's first run and Lona Dengler hit an RBI single in the first inning to give HSU a 2-0 lead.

Saint Martin's batters were successful at the plate against HSU starting pitcher Lexee Sheiring. Sheiring surrendered seven runs in 3.1 innings, and she left the game with the Green and Gold trailing 7-2.

JoAna Mullins sparked an HSU rally with an RBI single in a four-run fourth inning. The Saints committed a pair of errors to extend the frame and let the North Coast squad back into the ball game.

Trailing 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Mullins led things off with a double and scored on a Vigil single up the middle to make it a one-run contest. Carlier swatted a run-scoring single to left to even the score and force extra innings.

Niki DeHan hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth to seal the victory for the Saints. Rachel Bennet took the loss for HSU and finished with 4.2 innings in the relief appearance.

Game two was a forgettable outing for the Green and Gold as they were one-hit by Concordia (Calif.) starter Callie Nunes. Nunes fanned 10 Lumberjacks in seven innings and yielded just one hit to Vigil in the fourth.

The Eagles scored all four of their runs off Jasmine Hill. Hill suffered her fifth loss of the season.

HSU has a week off before traveling to Seaside to face Cal State Monterey Bay in a four-game series beginning April 6.
