Softball Splits Doubleheader Versus Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Lumberjacks had a chance for a doubleheader sweep, but came away with just one win versus Cal State Monterey Bay thanks to Hayley Fein's late-game heroics. Humboldt State softball split Saturday afternoon's twinbill with a 9-7 loss and 3-1 victory.

HSU led 7-3 in the sixth frame and seemed to have game one in hand before the home team started its rally. A fielding miscue to start the Otters half of the inning snowballed into a memorable moment for their sophomore sensation. Fein belted a pinch-hit grand slam to right centerfield to put Monterey Bay ahead 9-7 and help her team recover from her less-than-stellar pitching performance.

Fein got the win, despite allowing seven runs on seven hits, and her only hit proved to be the game-winner.

In 5.1 innings, Hill yielded nine runs and 10 hits. The senior took her seventh loss of the season.

Offensively, Amber Orchard led the Jacks with two of their seven hits while Hanna Holland and Micaela Harris each drove in two runs.

Lexee Sheiring helped the Green and Gold bounce back in the night cap. The freshman surrendered just three hits and worked her way out of a wacky first frame on her way to win No. 8.

Joanna Perruccio was hit by a pitch with one out in the first inning to get things started for the Otters. Three batters later, Perruccio stole home as part of a double steal for Monterey Bay's only run in the ball game.

HSU answered when Danica Grier muscled a two-run double down the left field line to score Illa Haley and JoAna Mullins the next inning. The North Coast team tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Harris executed a squeeze play to score Lauren Lipe from third.

The series resumes Sunday and first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
