Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader with SF State

SAN FRANCISCO – The Humboldt State softball team traveled to the Bay Area and opened its four-game series with San Francisco State Friday. The Lumberjacks split the twinbill after a dynamite start and a 4-1 victory in game one, followed by a 5-1 win for the home team in game two.

HSU made its presence known from the start of the series opener. Rylie Carlier smacked her team-leading sixth home run over the left field fence, driving in Michaela Harris and Winona Vigil in the first inning. Vigil battled at the plate before singling to third base and an error by SF State's Sara Higa sent Harris to first set up Carlier's three-run shot.

A single by Hanna Holland in the top of the fifth brought Danica Grier home to make it 4-0. SF State answered back with its only run of the game to close out the inning, making the score 4-1.

Jasmine Hill recorded her seventh win. The senior pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits and one earned run.

The Jacks struggled at the plate and in the field in game two. Holland doubled down the left field line in the first, but HSU was held hitless over the next four innings.

Three HSU errors in the first four frames helped the Gators take a 2-0 advantage, and a three-run fifth put the game out of reach.

A single by Dengler gave the visitors hope in the seventh before Grier's RBI double to center drove in Dengler to break up the shutout, making it a 5-1 final.

HSU sent three to the circle in game two, but it was starter Lexee Sheiring that took the loss. The freshman surrendered seven hits and two runs in 4.1 innings.

Th Jacks and Gators will face off again for another doubleheader tomorrow. Game one is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
