Chico State Takes Two From HSU Softball

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State softball hosted California Collegiate Athletic Association leader Chico State Friday afternoon at HSU Softball Field and lost both games of the doubleheader. The Lumberjacks were shut out in the series opener, 7-0, and watched the Wildcats rally with four runs in the seventh en route to a 10-8 victory.

Chico State struck for six runs in the first three frames of game one. The visitors forced HSU starter Jasmine Hill from the game after two innings, and the junior suffered her eighth loss of the season.

Illa Haley singled to third base in the third inning for the Jacks' first hit of the game, and the North Coast team managed just three hits against Chico State ace Haley Gilham.

Gilham spun a complete game shutout, walked three and struck out a pair. She picked up her 20th victory.

HSU got on the board first and scored two runs to begin the night cap, but Chico State rallied and retook the lead. The Wildcats hit a three-run triple and two-run homer in the top of the third to jump in front, 5-2.

Rylie Carlier belted a three-run shot in the bottom of the third to even the score, and the teams traded runs in the fourth before an Amber Orchard go-ahead, two-run single. Carlier finished the game with a team-high three hits.

Chico State trailed 8-6 in the seventh, but the Wildcats weren't ready to suffer their fourth loss of the year. Karli Skowrup hit a one-out, two-run homer to tie the game and her teammates added a pair of runs to seal the win.

Lexee Sheiring took the loss for the Green and Gold and tossed 7.0 innings, allowed 10 runs on seven hits.

HSU continues the series versus Chico State Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
