Softball Drops Series to Chico State

ARCATA, Calif. – It was a long afternoon for the Humboldt State softball program as it suffered a 9-0 setback in five innings to rival Chico State before losing a hard-fought 16-13 loss in the series finale.

The visiting Wildcats registered nine runs on 13 hits in the first game. Chico State scored three runs in the second, third and fourth frames as it delivered HSU its third straight loss.

HSU was limited to just three hits in the first game. Jasmine Hill took the loss and she allowed six runs on seven hits to go with five walks.

For the second day in a row, the Green and Gold offense showed life against the Wildcats' pitchers not named Haley Gilham. The Lumberjacks (19-25, 14-16 CCAA) scored three runs in the bottom of the first behind a RBI double from Hanna Holland, a run-scoring single courtesy of Micaela Harris and a wild pitch.

Chico State scored seven runs on six hits in the second inning to take an 8-3 advantage, but HSU refused to give up. The North Coast team plated a run in the second before a six-run third put it in charge 9-8.

The Jacks' lead was short lived as a run-scoring error and a Wendy Cardinali three-run homer in the next inning put the visitors back in front – this time for good.

Rylie Carlier continued her power surge with a team-leading eighth home run in the fifth.

HSU's 1-2-3 hitters each finished the game with three hits, and Winona Vigil and Harris each drove in three runs apiece.

The Green and Gold host Sonoma State next weekend at HSU Softball Field. The series begins Friday at 1 p.m.
