Softball Earns Series Split with Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. – For the second day in a row, the Humboldt State softball program split its afternoon doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay. The Lumberjacks won the first game 4-3 and the Otters earned a 9-3 victory in Sunday's series finale.

Freshman Danica Grier was HSU's top offensive player and came up with team's big hit in its win. With the game tied 2-2 in the sixth, Grier hit a two-run homer to give the visitors the 4-2 advantage.

HSU starter Jasmine Hill managed to hold off the Otters in 6.1 innings of work. The senior scattered nine hits and allowed three runs en route to her sixth win of the season. Sam Sarmiento closed out the game with 0.2 innings of scoreless relief, which earned her save No. 1.

A season-high five errors spelled doom for the North Coast squad in its series finale.

Monterey Bay took a 1-0 lead in the first, and three Green and Gold miscues helped the home team increase its lead to 4-1 through two frames.

Three runs in the third marked the end of a tough afternoon for HSU starting pitcher Lexee Sheiring. The freshman took the loss and allowed seven runs, four earned, in 2.2 innings. Sarmiento and Rachel Bennett replaced the Jacks starter and tossed 3.1 innings of relief.

The Jacks struggled at the plate compiling just four hits in the first game, but things didn't improve in the second game. HSU stranded 10 baserunners, including three in the seventh.

Grier went 2-for-2 at the plate and walked in the finale.

HSU travels to San Francisco for a series with the Gators beginning Friday at 1 p.m.
