Women's Soccer Starts Season With An Exhibition Victory

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team kicked off the season on a high note as they defeated Corban University 2-0 in an exhibition match Tuesday evening at College Creek Field.

The Lumberjacks came out with tremendous energy and their relentless pressure seemed to give the visiting Warriors trouble early. HSU finished the game with 20 total shots and 12 on target as they limited Corban's scoring chances to only four shots on goal.

"I'm so proud of each and every one of the girls and cannot wait to see what the future holds for this team," said senior defender and team captain Maddie Barnett. "Everyone brings something different, and when we play as a whole we will be unstoppable."

The game remained scoreless entering the 41st minute before Humboldt ended the tie with a goal from junior forward Kaleigh Alves at the 41:26 mark. Sophomore midfielder Sabine Postma controlled the ball at the top of the box as she sent a rocket towards goal. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar into the lap of senior defender Jensen Smith who passed to a wide open Alves for the finish. The second half was all Humboldt as the Jacks outshot the Warriors 13-2. Senior forward Alex Jenkins added to the scoring with her own goal as she slipped one past the keeper off a nice feed from Postma in the 73:48 mark.

"It's always nice to get a game against a good team that tests you on both sides of the ball," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "We did a good job of moving the ball today but we have to improve our ability to finish the final ball. This is a good start, and now we have eight days to prepare for Concordia."

The Lumberjacks open the regular season on the road as they face Concordia University of Oregon Thursday, Aug. 30, at 1:30 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
