Volleyball Captures Season-Opening Win Over Pacific Union

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball program finally put memories of the 2017 campaign to rest as they opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Pacific Union in game one of the NorCal Volleyball Classic.

"We definitely looked like a team playing its first match of the year," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We struggled with consistency, but it's great to start out the year with a win. We have several areas we intent to focus on for the rest of the weekend."

The Lumberjacks lost the first set, 25-21, as the Pioneers offense compiled a match high .432 hitting percentage. HSU turned the tables on Pacific Union winning by a 25-12 margin in the second set before edging the Pioneers 25-23 in the third. The Green and Gold hung on for a 25-18 victory in the deciding set despite hitting just .147 and committing a match-high seven attack errors.

Junior Lauren Reid led the Jacks offense with nine kills and recorded a .438 hitting percentage, while sophomore setter Juliana Bertolucci paced the squad with a career-best 23 assists. On the defensive side, sophomore Carla Crespo tallied 16 digs and Summer Hansen was responsible for four solo blocks.

HSU travels to Belmont, Calif., Friday to face Pacific Union. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m.
