Hawaii Pacific Sinks Volleyball at West Region Volleyball Showcase

OAKLAND, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball lost to Hawaii Pacific 3-1 (25-12, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19) in day two of the West Region Volleyball Showcase.

The Sharks were hungry after opening the season with a 0-4 record and they feasted on Lumberjack (2-4) miscues en route to their first victory. HSU struggled offensively in the opening set hitting just .027. Hawaii Pacific led for most of the first frame and closed with 10 of the set's final 12 points on the way to a 25-12 win.

The Lumberjacks trailed 6-2 in the second set before evening the score with a Summer Hansen kill and four Shark errors. HSU used a 6-0 spurt down the closing stretch to pull ahead 24-23 and a Lenox Loving kill and Emma Flewell ace clinched the set for the Green and Gold, 26-24.

After hitting .216 in the second set, HSU slipped to .088 in the third. Hawaii Pacific surrendered the set's first point, but scored the next three and never trailed the rest of the way. The Sharks won the third set 25-15.

HSU got out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth, but the North Coast squad wasn't able to hold the lead. Hawaii Pacific's offense continued to click as it compiled a .279 hitting percentage and recorded just three attack errors. Carson Pyle and Sierra Piester combined for seven Shark kills as they took the deciding frame 25-19.

The Jacks committed 23 attack errors in the loss, the second-most of the season, and four block errors.

Loving led the Green and Gold with 11 kills, while Taylor Yancey recorded a season-high 25 assists. Savannah Horton led the Jacks with five blocks and Natalie Picone notched 22 digs.

HSU faces host Holy Names Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
