Men’s Soccer Falls to Dominican 2-1

ARCATA, Calif. – Missed opportunities for the Humboldt State men's soccer team resulted in a 2-1 loss against Dominican University Saturday at College Creek Field. Despite multiple attempts from Isaiah Dairo and Francisco Calderon, HSU struggled to finish in the box.

"Full credit to Dominican today, they played very well and deserved the win," said HSU Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We created some good chances and had opportunities to tie up the game, but their keeper made some big saves towards the end to finish off the game. We will learn from our mistakes though and come out hungry to get back on track for Friday."

Calderon put the only point on the board for Humboldt State after Dominican keeper Ruben Raygoza came out to attempt a takeaway on Gus Baxter. A short pass from Baxter to Calderon sparked HSU's first and only point of the day at the 15:26 mark. Dominican answered back 10 minutes later when a cross to Luke Raley from the left snuck by HSU keeper Bryan Hernandez at 25:51 to even it up.

The go-ahead for Dominican came at 47:24 when Matt Albert received his own rebound off a crossbar deflection, placing his second shot in the net.

The Jacks struggled to find the back of the net, putting up 21 shots in the loss, with 11 shots on goal. Tyler Guptill, Max Steinmetz, Danny Allred and Martin Calderon played the full 90 minutes, and Hernandez finished with three saves for the game.

"This loss is a wake-up call for the team in terms of refining the way we play," said Hernandez. "Dominican, honestly, played better than us and they wanted it more at the end of the day. We just simply have to train and play like the good team that we are."

Humboldt State will welcome Concordia (Ore.) on Friday, Sept. 7 at College Creek Field for a match set to begin at 1 p.m.
